Review: Charge (Pre-Workout)

Years ago I used to bloody love a pre-workout supplement. I remember downing double scoops of Gaspari Superpump 250 (what a name) before playing football matches, and doubling-up on N.O. Xplode before a gym session. There was actually a time I had a major YOLO moment and took 3 scoops, and was asked by my training buddy if I was drunk after not being able to speak properly. This, coupled with some photo finishes in the toilets and lying awake with heart palpitations, was enough for me to take a step back. Still to this day I find the name N.O. Xplode ironic, as there was definitely some exploding.

Now I’m older, wiser, and (arguably) sexier, I know that overuse or reliance on stimulant packed pre-workouts will cause havoc for anyone’s adrenal glands, central nervous system, blood sugar, and will impact on sleep and recovery.

That said, I feel they still have a place if they’re used sparingly and sensibly.

My current pre-workout treat is Charge from Bodybuilding Warehouse – a company I’ve been using for years and that I really rate.

Charge has actually been around a while too, although it was withdrawn while the formula was changed. Thankfully, the flavour was changed too. The old Tropical flavour required me to drink it over the sink, just in case it came back up.

To me, the Berry Blitz flavour I’m using tastes like apple and blackcurrant squash (takes me back), and mixes really well too. Nothing worse than chewing on a lump of pre-workout…although the aforementioned photo finishes were arguably worse.

The new Charge contains a potent mix of caffeine and creatine nitrate, and the usual suspects (beta-alanine, citrulline malate, and taurine) so it packs a hefty punch.

Verdict:

Having used it a few times now, I’ve been really impressed and would recommend it.

When I’ve needed it, it’s given me the kick up the ass that was required. I felt focused in the gym, but not jittery – talking wasn’t an issue and nobody accused me of being drunk and disorderly. More importantly it hasn’t given me that horrible crash a few hours later, and it’s not affected my sleep negatively.

At £19.99 for 40 servings, this is great value. Especially for a chap like me, as this will keep me going for 6-12 months quite comfortably.

If you’re not a fan of pre-workouts, I’d still recommend heading over to www.bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk to check out their other ranges. To me, their customer service is second to none, and prices / special offers are right up there too.
